I’ll be honest I haven’t heard of the Youth Offer? I’ve googled it to find out but can’t find anything. What it is it exactly? Sorry did you mean a Youth Officer?

There are quite a lot of youth officers in Coventry from all types of organisations, not just at the council. You will find them in Youth Clubs ect trying to get to know young people. I must admit though I never met one when I was a kid as I just got on with what I was doing. I didn’t want an adult interfering!! I am sure many of them do a good job though. Finally, doing this sort of thing better demonstrates what young people want. You want much the same as older people, things to do, places to go and to be recognised and appreciated for what you are and what you do. PS, I’ve read the question wrong! But the point is still well made in the sense that it’s about accommodating and respecting young people in Coventry.

yes I have. The govet said all councils need to publish their youth offer, which is the basic things offered to young people in their area. In coventry we diecided that actually that was very general, and young people need to know what they can expect in their local area.
We are currently working with another organisation (Groundworks) in 6 neighbourhoods, which are all in the more deprived areas of the city, to develop a Youth Offer that is relevant to young people in those areas.
The main focus is on positive activities – ie things to do in leisure time – but it will also cover targetted support and advice, and opportunities for participation eg in youth council, school councils etc. It’s being developed alongside young people taking on board their views, so what we expect to get from it is area specific Youth Offers, which are tailored to the expectations and desires of young people in those areas.
That should mean that there are things provided differently across the city, depending on what young people say.

All councils should publish their youth offer, which are things offered to young people in their area. More consultation with young people about what they want in their area would allow the offer to become more tailored to the specific need within a community.

No, the Youth Offer is a document that came from ‘Youth Matters’ in 2005, it states what the Youth Service promises to provide for young people within their local authority, but at the moment the Youth Offer that is provided by Coventry is generic for all areas despite the wide varience of young people across the city.

Ok I’ve done my research and found out about Youth work, to me it seems a very good idea about listening to and engaging with what young people want to see in their community. But good ideas don’t always work in practice, I understand from your comments you say they are too generic what particularly makes it too generic? Is the scheme not flexible enough to adapt to each local area? If so in what way? Sorry I know you should be asking me the questions, but you clearly have a better understanding and first hand experience of how it operates in practice. So what improvments do you think could be made?

Hi, I actually posted the question on behalf of the young people involved in the Our Choice project which is being run with Groundwork, the young people have identified that they are very different needs within each area of Coventry, whether that be to do with crime rates, education, access to youth provision, cultural needs and many more; although the youth offer does include these, the differences in the areas and their needs are not met specifically enough, which is what the young people are trying to change, obviously they are aware that needs of areas can change and therefore the tailored youth offers need to adaptable and refreshed regulary to coincide with the current needs of young people within those areas. But the young people wanted to know if any of the Councillors had any ideas of how to incorporate young people’s views and opinion more into policy making, without them feeling like this is a token gesture?
(Thanks Ms Kelly, the young people will be thrilled that you’ve heard of us!)

    Hi Ourchoice
I’m the councillor responsible for the Youth Service. I’ve already said I’ll visit Foleshill Our Choice, I am happy to visit others as well. If you want to meet up with me after this we can talk about how we can make sure this isn’t a token gesture and also talk about how young people can be more involved in other areas of policy as well. My email address is on the council website so get in touch.
