Well, she may be affected, she may not, it depends on a lot of things. If the person that she childminds for loses their job, then your mum might need to find someone else to look after children for, so a lot depends on whose children it is that she is looking after. If she looks after children for more than one person, then she will probably be OK because even if one parent drops her she still has some income.

I think every job is going to be affected in some way or other. I don’t have any specifics about your mum. All I know is the Conservative government are going completely mad in cutting cutting cutting with out thinking of the consequences of their actions. Everyone knows because of the world banking crisis and collapse which has affected every country in the world there’s less money about but to be so draconian is a great risk and will potentialy do more harm than good. In Coventry we will do what we can to help people but it will be very difficult.

I’m not entirely sure how it would affect your mum directly, unless parents of the children that your mum looks after were using their child benefit to pay your mum for childminding. As the Government recently announced that any parents earning over £44,000 a year would no longer receive child benefit from the Government, which is approximately £20 per week for the first child and £13 for additional children, which is alot of money to miss out on over a whole year.

It does depend on where she works, most childminders are either work for themselves or are employed by parents directly so it is unlikely they would directly impact on your Mum’s job. It has been interesting to note in recent weeks that the number of jobs advertised in the Coventry Telegraph each week has been rising. Also an after/before school club in my ward has seen an increase in students attending over recent weeks. This has been put down to the economy picking up again, so your mum may see her numbers rise if she looks after childrens whose parents mostly work in the private sector.

There will of course be choices for Councillors about what services to protect and as mentioned in another answer Coventry City council has already decided to save more than the Government requires. Services for children should be high on the priority list of those which must be protected.

My wife and I have 5 small grandchildren, so we know how important childminding is.

If your mum works only for private employers, then she will not be affected.

If any Council money is involved, then the position will not be clear for some time. More detail will be given when Mr Osbourne speaks in Parliament on 20 October, but the Government is looking, I believe, for overall reductions of about 7% each year for about 5 years to get rid of the current deficit.

As the Labour Party promised to halve the deficit in 4 years, there will probably not be an enormous annual difference overall, but we wait to know more.

I am sorry to bring in politics- I do not think that this is the correct area for such discussions. But unfortunately I note that other colleagues are rather ranting on, so it seems important to bring some commonsense to the discussion.

What they are not saying is that there has been a real danger of the UK losing its overall international credit rating, which could greatly increase costs of borrowing and mean many more cuts. Fortunately, with the return of a more realistic Government, that danger has passed.

Whatever happens, I wish your Mum well.

I suppose if your mum childminds for anyone who’s hours are reduced or who loses their job she could be affected as they may not be able to afford to pay for childcare. There may also be changes to child & working tax credit which could affect peoples ability to pay for childcare.
